Luke 2:8-10
“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.”
This is the introductory portion of one of my favorite passages in the entire Bible. The angel of the Lord announced the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. But here’s the thing … he announced this momentous event to the shepherds in the field.
God by-passed the kings of the day and the presidents, senators, representatives, mayors, councilmen, and all other high-titled individuals of tomorrow. He announced it to the so-called “common” people … like you … me … your next-door neighbor … the people in the hood … the people living in rowhouses and rural villages and farms … to schoolteachers … firemen (and women) … factory workers … street sweepers and trash collectors and the like.
No matter our station in life, we are valued in the eyes of the Lord even if we are not valued in the eyes of the self-important or those of high titles.
Have a Very Merry Christmas, a Wonderful Holiday Season, and a Blessed 2022!
