HIS BIRTH

The LORD GOD sent the angel Gabriel to make a one-time announcement that would shake the religious and spiritual foundations of the people of Israel and the Gentile nations of the world forever.

Luke 1:26-27, 30-35

“And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named which Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.”

“And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”

The angel Gabriel announced to a virgin, Mary, as prophesied in Isaiah 7:14, who was chosen to bring forth the Son of God. God in the flesh, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit, would come and dwell on earth. He is ordained to sit on the throne of His father David, from whom He is a direct descendant (Matthew 1 and Luke 3). God promised David that his kingdom would last forever (2 Samuel 7:16) and Jesus, as the Son of God, will reign on this throne forever (Daniel 7:13-14).

Luke 2:7-11

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

The announcement of His coming birth was matched by His actual birth. It is worth noting that the angel of the Lord made his announcement to shepherds in the field and not to the priests or other high-level officials.
